Through their work on behalf of World Jewish Aid, Project Group members have been involved in some forty development projects across three continents and undertaken with a wide range of development partners. A small sample might include:
Village School in Chalish District, Nepal
JAD has worked for more than five years, to support a village school in Chalish district and have advised and liaised with UKJAID to provide funds to help increase its capacity to accommodate up to 100 pupils. It now benefits from 2 new classrooms, 2 new teachers, educational aids, play & sports materials, a pre-school class, and offers 4 years of primary education. Thanks to the efforts of local partners, an agreement was reached with the Nepalese government in November 2006 to provide teachers.
Schools and Disabled Children’s Centres in Galle, Sri Lanka
JAD advised and liaised with UKJAID to support the Senehasa Trust in building three schools and several pre-schools and has provided much needed improvements in educational facilities for the poor in Galle, Sri Lanka’s Southern Province. This includes supporting the development of a network of pre-schools where young children are fed and gain the basics of literacy, before entering formal education. We also secured funds to equip and improve a Disabled Children’s Centre and audiology unit in Galle with the Senehasa Trust. The new centre includes a therapy play area and staff accommodation.
Child-Friendly Spaces – Darfur, Sudan
Working with the International Rescue Committee, JAD advised and liaised with UKJAID to support the Youth for Youth Development Project at Kalma Camp, South Darfur where refugees had been fleeing in great numbers to escape renewed violence. The programme provides a psycho-social outlet for internally displaced people between the ages of 14 and 18 living in the camp who can participate in activities essential for their healthy development. Activities include non-formal education, training skills and recreation.
Clean Homes – Nepal
We advised and liaised with UKJAID to support a local partner in Nepal, Practical Action, which had managed a clean homes project. This area of work builds on previous initiatives with women’s groups in Kenya, Sudan and Nepal to reduce indoor air pollution related to cooking and heating. This problem kills 1.6 million people per year, principally women and children, who spend more time close to fires. Practical Action Nepal aims to promote and implement clean fuel technology in poor rural homes and in villages at lower altitudes.
Grinding Mill in Masho, Ethiopia
JAD advised and liaised with UKJAID to support this project in Ethiopia. The aim of this project, conceived by the Gamo Development Trust, was to set up a grinding mill in the community of Masho, in south west Ethiopia. The women of Masho had struggled to grind grain by hand, or otherwise carry extremely heavy loads to the nearest mill, some two hours walk from the area. The mill has changed that and now functions as a community business which generates much needed income for further local development projects.
Malawi - Chembe AIDS Project (CAP)
From September to December 2002 UKJAID raised £50,000 for famine Relief in Southern Africa. One of the projects JAD advised on and which UKJAID supported was the CAP - an HIV/AIDS project in Chembe, Malawi, set up by two Israeli women introduced to us by Israeli colleagues. The project has expanded to include a medical clinic and much needed food provision.
Quality Care & Support Services for HIV/AIDS Sufferers – Zambia
With Harvest Help in Zambia, JAD advised and liaised with UKJAID to provide funding to establish Care and Prevention Teams (CPTs) in Chipapa, Lusaka Province. These teams have responsible for raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, promoting safe practices and offering voluntary counselling and testing, as well as other types of counselling services. The CPTs are linked to the Chipapa Clinic and other national healthcare organisations dealing with HIV/AIDS, such as the Society for Family Health.
Revolving Loan Fund – Kitale, Kenya
In partnership with Practical Action Kenya, JAD advised and liaised with UKJAID to support the development of small businesses, particularly those run by women. Street traders were assisted in a number of ways, and received training in negotiating with local authorities, business and financial skills. An integral aspect of the scheme was a community-managed revolving credit fund, which aimed to promote business stability.
Streets Ahead Childrens’ Centre (SACCA) – Rwanda
JAD advised and liaised with UKJAID to provide funds to support the work of Streets Ahead an organisation responsible for orphanages and day centres in Kayonza, Rwamagana and Kabarondo. These care for some 100 children aged 10-21, orphaned or abandoned by their families as a result of civil war, poverty or AIDS. The centres make sure they are properly clothed and fed, educated, or trained for vocational work and established in communally owned businesses. The children are supported and motivated to abandon street life and take up employment.
Sarajevo Homecare Project - Bosnia-Herzegovina
This ongoing project, run under the auspices of local Jewish humanitarian aid organisation - La Benevolencija - improves the daily lives of over 600 vulnerable elderly people of every ethnic origin. Since 2002, a team of social workers has been delivering practical assistance to over 65s in their homes, thereby alleviating anxieties experienced by the chronically sick, disabled & isolated. In 2003, JAD organised and facilitated a benefit concert at LSO St Lukes which raised £13,000 to support the development of this project.
